If travelling to Babynino from Moscow by car, watch for this sign about 25 km from the turn to Kaluga. Is it just me or does it really look like an ice-cream cone.

Moscow is 200km north-east, and Kiev is about 600km south-west.  See notes on travelling from Kaluga to Kiev (and then on to Odessa and Chisinau)  on the Kaluga page of this site.

What can possibly entice you to Babynino

No sights or attractions. Not a village, not a city but a perfect example of "населенный пункт" ("populated point"). Conventional tourists have no reason to visit Babynino. I may, however, soon have a reason to try to entice you there, thus this page and this site.

Since part of this site's mission is to entice tourists to the Babynino district I will be looking for sites and attractions in the area. The ancient town of Vorotynsk is one such a possibility. Picturesuqe villages of Koptsevo and Moshonki are both within riding distance from Babynino and Svetlitsy.. Meshovks, 40-50 km from Svetlitsy by car, or 25 or so by a horse that you can borrow in Svetlitsy, is the nearest place with a serious potential to become a tourist destination.

The Village of Svetlitsy project (see www.svetlitsy.ru, English page promised soon) that consists of a cow farming operation, an eco-park experiments, a horseback riding program, a summer camp for children and teenagers etc. etc. is perhaps the only thing that may be of interest to you. Babynino also has dynamic, progressive and otherwise positive local government that is likely to be open to new ideas. So if you come here with an idea to settle yourself in Russia, and especially to live the life of a Russian peasant/farmer/land owner, becoming friends/neighbours with the Svetlitsy project in the Babynino district, Kaluga region, is worth considering. Are you a devote Orthodox looking for ways to please your Deity of choice? Several church restoration projects are under way near Svetlitsy and, unlike in many other places where sacred buildings are restored by sponsors that, for all practical purposes, are part of the government, in Babynino and nearby this effort is supported by local population.

Ask about buying a cheap house in the village, working holidays, investing into land, learning Russian by immersion...  Direct your enquiries to

Location & getting there

200??? km from Moscow, 45 km from Kaluga, almost on the Moscow to Kiev highway.

By car just follow Leninsky prospect in Moscow till the turn to Kaluga (200 km...) and then another ???? km till you see a 70s Soviet era concrete sign that looks like an icecream cone. [photo] Turn right. Made it.

[Direct bus from Moscow - ask Roma]

[Train from Moscow] Trains to Babynino leave Moscow off the Kiev station (M. Kiyevskaya). Commuter trains ("elektrichka"0 leave Moscow at 6:05am, 6:51am, 9:58am, 1:52pm, 6:25pm, and 7:34pm. These trains are noisy and otherwise uncomfortable. If you have a choice, go for Express Trains.

Express trains from Kiyevsky station, Moscow, to Babynino... [or just ot Kaluga?]

Where to stay

No hotels in Babynino. The nearest is Motel Ugra, ??? km of the Moscow to Kiev road, on your left, in the village of Sosnovy Bor (Pine Forest). Rooms start at 600 roubles ($20-something). I have not myself stayed there but the hotel is said to be clean and functional. Their telephone, as dialed from Moscow or from your Moscow-registered cell phone, is 8-4842-755555.. Kaluga, with its at least half a dozen hotels, is of course an option.

If you are a guest of Svetlitsy - nearly all foreigners who find themselves in Babynino are there because of Svetlitsy - they may provide you with accommodation. Several houses are likely to be bought soon at the nearby village of Koptsevo, at the other hand of the Svetlitsy property but in the Meshevsk district, so by the time you read this putting you up may no longer be a problem.

Train station "Babynino". Note "Glory to the Communist Party" and get ready to see it on every third gray brick building.

An anti-aesthetics connoisseur's paradise.

But prices make up for what some wimps from the west may call filth.

Interested in local economy? Here is
a sample of prices for a variety of goods and services in Babynino
(recorded Feb. 2006)

If you prefer to be disgusted by things physiological, visit one of local cafes.

Low-tech information exchange systems still used here. You can even by old-fashioned stencils in the local stationery store.
